To Terri:
by: Darlene - Webmaster

I know you submitted your story quite some time ago. I've been dealing with eye issues that have made reading online a major problem. My apologies for taking so long to post.

Terri, when we still fear the abuser well into adulthood, we our stuck at the age we were when the abuse took place. It can be helpful to bring a different perspective to the situation. Try this exercise: Consider how old your stepfather would be today if he were still alive, and the fact that you are now in your late 50's. So for example, I'll assume you were 12 when the abuse happened, and further assume that he was 27, a 15-year difference. It could be more, or even less, but stay with me here. He would be deep into his 70's today, maybe even older, and given his addictions and the impact on his body, very likely incapable of doing harm to anyone. Try to picture yourself in front of him during his advanced years, and stand up to him. Tell him all that you need to tell him. Use every nasty word in the dictionary if that feels right to you. Just get everything off your chest. Then, afterward, take REALLY good care of yourself in a healthy way. You didn't deserve to be so terribly beaten...you sure do deserve to bring healing into your life.

I do hope that at some point in the future, there can be healing available to your son so that a relationship is possible between you, and your grandchildren too.

I send you healing energy, Terri. Thank you for sharing your story with my visitors and me.
