Your brother doesn't know what he's talking about. You have been, and are being, neglected and emotionally abused. You are not getting some of your basic needs met: child neglect. You'll be able to relate to some of the child neglect facts. My emotional child abuse page offers a definition. You'll be able to relate to some of what's on my types of emotional abuse page. But more importantly, you need help, Lauren. You can't deal with this alone, especially given the fact that you are now self-harming. Please talk to someone you trust. If you can't talk to your father, consider speaking to a teacher, a school counselor, some other trust adult. Consider contacting Child Help at 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453) in order to talk to someone about the abuse you are still dealing with. They are staffed 24/7 with professionally trained counsellors who will listen to you. They are not a reporting agency, although they can help you through the process of reporting if you decide to disclose the abuse. You can visit their website by copying & pasting the following URL into your browser: http://www.childhelp.org/get_help

You ARE worthy of love. You ARE lovable. You ARE worthy of dignity and respect. Always remember that. Thank you for sharing your story with my visitors and me.

Update
by: Lauren M

My dad recently found out that I cut myself; he and mom asked me why, but I was scared to tell because mom was there. Eventually, because my mother is a very persistant woman, I told them I cut myself because of mom. She laughed at me, and accused me of just doing it for attention, and to make her look bad. My dad didn't say anything, and has acted like nothing had happened ever since. Nothing's changed...

I'm selectively mute, so, I can only really talk about this over the internet, with my brother, or my dad.
But thank you for your kind words and help, Darlene, and thank you for posting my story on your website.

Lauren, what a brave and courageous young lady you are. I've experienced the same type of abuse/neglect and I got through it best by playing sports. Maybe if you don't play sports you can do more of the ballet you said you like, or perhaps something else like music or art that's therapeutic. However, with self abuse, you need to release endorphins that you are carrying so please exercise, it will help with what triggers your self injury. Bless you. You are a strong and beautiful person. Thanks for sharing. Things will get better. It's a big world. Great things are in store for you. God has good plans for you. Plans to prosper you and bring you hope and a future. You will survive this.
