From a psychological level, your mother was so severely affected by having to give up her baby boy that she took it out on you. This is not a reflection on you; it's a reflection on her. You paid the price in spades. And while I don't disagree that her treatment and mistreatment of you plays a big role in your addiction(s), you can choose something different in your life. If you choose addiction and pointing the finger of blame to your mother, you will never find the path of healing and recovery. Your mother never found that path. Instead, she chose her addictions, using what happened in her life as an excuse. But that's what it was: an excuse. Break that cycle, Angela. Don't allow what happened to your mother keep happening with you. You didn't deserve what she dished out to you. You deserved a mother who loved and cared about you. A mother who took an interest in you, in your abilities, in your well-being. You deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. But you weren't. And now it's left to YOU to give YOURSELF what your mother seemed incapable of giving. The choice is yours. Please consider some form of counseling to help you deal with all this. You deserve that kind of help. Thank you for sharing your story with my visitors and me.
